SQLMesh

Virtual environments, column-level lineage, and plan-based SQL transforms.

SQLMesh cover

About SQLMesh

SQLMesh is the plan-based alternative to dbt: virtual data environments, column-level lineage, and a compiler that treats SQL as a project with diffs, not a pile of models you hope CI understands.

It is not “dbt but faster” as a slogan. It is a different contract with the warehouse — environments as first-class, promotions as plans. Evaluate it if dbt state/defer is the weekly pain.

What you'll learn here

  • Virtual environments vs dbt targets and schemas
  • Plans, backfills, and what a promotion actually changes
  • Column-level lineage and why it changes code review
  • When to stay on dbt and when a rewrite is honest

Frequently asked questions

Should I migrate off dbt?

Only if environments, lineage, or incremental correctness are the bottleneck — not because a blog said so. dbt is the hiring default. SQLMesh is a bet you must staff.

Does SQLMesh replace Airflow?

No. Same split as dbt: SQLMesh builds the SQL DAG; Airflow/Dagster still owns cross-system schedules. Some teams run SQLMesh’s scheduler for the transform layer only.

Will analysts write SQLMesh?

If they write dbt today, they can write SQLMesh. The learning curve is the plan/environment model, not SELECT. Budget onboarding like a tool change, not a rename.
